About the book:
|
In a world that is in constant shifting, where mountains can change to plains, and then to lakes, Talyn is the Hunter for the Caisah, and a wreck of a once-proud person. She has lost her people, the Vaerli, and her soul working for the man who destroyed her people. All unknowing, she carries within her a Kindred, a chaos creature from the center of the earth that wants to help bring the Vaerli back to power. However, she has lost the ability to communicate with it.
Little does the Hunter know that salvation is looking for her, and it wears the face of gentleness and strength. Finn is a teller of tales who carries his own dreadful secret. He sets out to find answers to his path but ends up in the city of Perilous and Fair where he meets Talyn. He knows the danger and is yet drawn to her. Their fates will be bound together.
Meanwhile, the Hunter’s lost brother Byre is searching for his own solution to the terrible curse placed on the Vaerli. He sets forth on a treacherous journey of his own, which will intersect in the most unlikely place with that of Talyn and Finn. The ramifications of this encounter will be felt by all the people in Conhaero, from the lost Vaerli to the Caisah on his throne.
What I’m talking about:
|
Hunter and Fox is a true fantasy and with that comes a complex new world full of magic and inhabited by beings with an array of abilities. Key to the story are are: 1) the primary heroine, Talyn the Dark (think Xena). She is Caisah's bounty hunter. She is Vaerli, a once powerful race with seven magical gifts, to include the ability to "move and see" through time. 2) The bad guy, Caisah, ruler of Conhaero. His power is supreme and his sanity borders on madness. He has broken the once powerful Vaerli, stealing their powers and making Talyn his killer. 3) The understated hero, Finbarr (Finn) the Fox. He is a talespinner with a gift for storytelling. He follows Talyn with love in his heart, telling others the stories of the Vaerli, hoping to make a difference. 4) The martyr hero, Byreniko, Talyn’s brother. He has wandered for years, never knowing his people, but now is ready to take a stand and fight for freedom.
Ms. Ballantine has created an intricately detailed world, full of magic and mysticism. She spent the first three or so chapters expertly laying the foundation for her world, detailing not only the conflicts and points of the plot, but giving the reader just enough of this world to understand enough to be captivated.
Plain and simple, Hunter and Fox is a elaborate and involving tale. On the surface it appears to cover the potential rebellion against the evil oppressor, Caisah, and finding freedom for the Vaeril and all of the inhabitant of Conhaero. The Variel were once the dominate species; they had great power and were widely respected. Now they are shells with their gifts removed during the Harrowing, and even worse, they feared because of Talyn. Our three primary “heroes,” Talyn, Byreniko, and Finn, must go on his/her own journey to open their minds and hearts so that they may find truth and direction. They are watched over by the original inhabitants of this world, The Kindred, who are like spiritual beings of the earth. They are sort of helping, but not interfering.
Along the way, we are introduced to several minor characters that help foster the rebellion. One key figure is Retira, Talyn and Byre’s father. He has been gone from their lives for nearly 300 years, then shows up to warn Talyn she’s going down the wrong path (and basically disowns her), then joins Byre and pushes him on a dangerous journey. He clearly has his own agenda that he is not sharing. It made me distrust him and I was constantly wondering if he was truly who he claimed to be.
While Caisah plays a significant roll in the overall story - he is the cause of much of the current plight of the people of Conhaero, after the first few chapters, we don’t see much of him. His motivations are unclear, but his thirst to control and enjoyment in displaying his power are evident. A perfect example is in a quiet scene where Caisah insists his “Hawk” ride with her “Master” and his mistress, Kelanim. Caisah makes a show that he controls the fearsome Hunter, but he also enjoys the conflict.
She [Kelamin] sat next to the Caisah glaring with fiery eyes at Talyn. He like it that way. He moved everything in his world to conflict; from warring tribes to bickering women.
Unlike more current urban fantasies where the setting is typically familiar, Hunter and Fox is a traditional fantasy where the entire world is built from the ground up. The world created by Ms. Ballantine is enchanting, full of mysticism and fantastical races. She does an excellent job of not only detailing each, but giving us enough background and history to understand and recognize the important changes coming into play. It took some conscious effort to learn about each, but I never felt that the details were spoon-feed or forced. Although complex, the flow of information was seamless.
As the story progresses, the intricacies of the story increases by leaps and bounds. Hunter and Fox is about the journeys of these individuals as they try to find their way to a better place. It had the feel of an epic fantasy; a complex world on the brink of massive change. The time of oppression is coming to and end, and we are witnessing the start of something new. Unfortunately, we never got to find out what that new world order is. This book was only the first "chapter" of the saga, and I have to admit, I was disappointed. It was a long journey to get through this book and to end without conclusion was difficult to swallow.
This story requires time and energy; it's not a quick read, nor is it light. It is, however, an exciting and involved fantasy. For those like me that enjoy fantasy, Hunter and Fox is worth the read, but be aware that you are getting yourself into something larger than one book. I eagerly await what comes next.

What VampBard’s talking about:
|
Novels of the Etherlin are entirely awesome. While I didn't need to read the first title in this series, All That Bleeds, it was enjoyable and well-written. Important to note: author Kimberly Frost does a fabulous job filling in any blanks that might be present in book two, All That Falls. In my opinion, you could jump in to the series with this title...but I'm willing to bet you'd be chomping at the bit to backtrack to book one!
All That Falls picks up a couple months after the conclusion of All That Bleeds. It's a rather seamless transition, and any questions about the interim time are answered. We were introduced to Merrick, Alissa, and Lysander in the first book of the Etherlin series. We were also introduced to Cerise, a muse. This is a well-written angels/fallen angel/demon/vampire/muse read. Covers most bases, with regard to paranormal worlds. Ms. Frost did an excellent job with her world-building, and connecting all the dots for the reader. I didn't find holes in her world-building, and found I really enjoyed the way she created sub-divisions of the vampire race.
Part of the conflict is left-over from All That Bleeds. That's OK. I'm good with reading through the series to see how the major conflict in the series arc plays out. The major conflict from All That Falls centers around Cerise and her inner turmoil over her deceased boyfriend, a musician who was one of her aspirants. The circumstances surrounding his death are sketchy at best, and Cerise, with a hole in her memory, has a major guilt-trip about the situation. When she finds his last journal in a concert hall in the Etherlin, she's ecstatic... enter Lysander.
Cerise met Lysander during All That Bleeds, in-passing. He's a fallen angel, looking for redemption... and Merrick is integral to the prophecy about said redemption. While Lysander has killer good-looks, musical prowess that makes women weep, and a highly-developed ability to maim and kill, he also has a staunch moral compass that prevents him from acting on certain wants and desires. Brooding hero. Yup. That's him. Cerise is on his radar, and initially, he follows this inner compass to keep himself from falling for her. Because Lysander has little sense of humor, and seems to be drawn to irony, every time he would comment via inner monologue that it's so much better for everyone concerned if he's not involved … I had the overwhelming urge to ask, 'How's that workin' for ya?'.
While it seems at though the Etherlin society is falling apart at the seams in this title, I think that there is hope for the future of this Utopian society wannabe. Foreshadowing for the future plot arcs in the series has been accomplished. I couldn't figure out who the next installment will focus on for a couple, though.
Did I mention Ox yet? He's Merrick's bodyguard. I **heart** him! He seems like a complete teddy bear (until you tick him off). I really enjoyed how tender he was with Jersey near the end of the book.
I was really good with the ventala (half-breed vampires), as well as the rest of the world-building and character development. I really didn't have much of a problem with the title over-all. I'd like to see some detailed explanations of these characters for more description. At points few and far between, a couple times, The characters felt a bit flat for 20-35 pages. I am, however, excited to see the way Ms. Frost resolves the over-arching conflict. For the series.

About the book:
|
Amanda accepts an invite by the prestigious Institute for Women's Sexual Satisfaction. Volunteering for their study means she must divulge her deepest, naughtiest fantasies and then act on them. But one wicked fantasy involves watching her boyfriend do something so intimate, so forbidden that she's afraid he will refuse and may even break off their relationship.
Jared can't believe his gorgeous girlfriend wants to see another woman take his anal virginity. But he wants to make her wildest fantasies come true, and maybe finally engage in some secret fantasies of his own...
Warning: This story contains a loving couple indulging in some very steamy fantasies including F/F kissing and light touching along with a deliciously naughty F/M/F pegging scene.
What B is talking about:
|
What would it be like to make your hottest sexual fantasy come true in a safe environment, with no risks, and without hurting anyone? What if, even better, that fantasy was part of an experiment that would benefit women everywhere? Welcome to the Institute for Women’s Sexual Satisfaction, or the IWSS, for short.
The IWSS is an interesting home for these fantasies, mostly because its objective is so basic: to help a significant portion of the female population achieve sexual fulfillment through the exploration of individual fantasies. I think it’s much like the benefit the genre as a whole has the potential to provide, depending on the reader’s response.
Amanda and Jared are already devoted to one another, but she wants to push the edges of Jared’s comfort zone to include one particular fantasy she can’t let go of. He’s everything she could possibly want in a man, and definitely a “keeper,” but she’s convinced there’s room in their sexual relationship for more. Although, technically, For Your Eyes Only is about Amanda’s fantasy, both she and Jared get what they want from the endeavor.
The enactment of the fantasy itself is brief but extremely steamy, and Amanda ends up pushing her own boundaries, as well as putting Jared’s to the test. Ms. Mayburn doesn’t try to make the story more complicated than the exploration of a fantasy, leaving the reader free to simply “observe” and enjoy. The main characters’ consideration of one another as they surrender themselves to the pleasure of the moment lends an uncomplicated sexiness to the entire story.
For Your Eyes Only is a quick, naughty, fun read. While their time at the Institute is spent in consensual, boundary-pushing enjoyment, the results of their experience will ultimately be used to help all women achieve true sexual pleasure. This series has the potential to explore an assortment of fantasies, and I’m very curious to see what direction Ms. Mayburn might decide to follow next.

About the book:

It’s almost Valentine’s Day, and Zoë Sorensson’s love life is heating up. Cute, loyal, and understanding, wolf shifter Derek is pretty much the perfect guy. He likes Zoë, and he knows what it’s like to have to keep a secret. Yet, Zoë can’t help but wish it was rebel rocker Jared asking her to the Valentine’s dance instead. But Jared’s too busy playing hot and cold with her heart, calling Zoë his dragon girl one minute and then taking special interest in her best friend the next.
Zoë is just about ready to breathe fire, especially once she uncovers a new threat that targets her friends. Although Zoë thought the Mages were defeated, they’re back and have invoked an old spell to give them new power—they plan to eliminate all shape shifters on the night of the big dance. Now, Zoë must lead an alliance of young shifters to battle the Mages and figure out exactly what—and who—she wants, before it all goes up in smoke…
What G & U are talking about:
|
Blazing the Trail, it seems, is the final book in the young adult Dragon Diaries series. As it comes to a close, Gikany and Una are proud to see the young woman Zoe has matured into. In fact, we actually hoped to see more of her until, while researching for this review, we discovered it is a trilogy, and this is the end.
In Blazing the Trail Zoe must finally choose what she wants in life, more importantly: who. This final decision may have ramifications that will affect the alliance and the future of the shapeshifters. The strife between Zoe and Trevor is finally resolved. Through this novel, Zoe fully comes into her powers or at least can recognize them better.
There were a few moments that felt a little simplistic and obvious, but that could be because Gikany and Una are adults reading this – lacking the naivety of a high school girl. However, the body count in this novel is a little shocking. Blazing the Trail has a few more gruesome moments compared to the previous novels. With the death of classmates, we would recommend that high school and older students read this series.
Although there is some typical teenager drama and angst, this final edition of the Dragon Diaries had a maturity to it, in the writing and style, which helped to support the feeling of Zoe’s maturity level rising. She realized she needed to learn from her mistakes, not dive in before evaluating the situation, and truly gauge what her heart and mind were telling her. She seemed much more balanced – giving us a glimmer of the great Wyvern she will be.
All in all, Gikany and Una enjoyed the Dragon Diaries trilogy and the final book, Blazing the Trail. We hope that we will get a glimpse of these great characters in the future. Even though there is a sense of finality to the ending, you just never know and we hold hope that maybe there will be future novels.

Angels of the Dark #1
ISBN: #978-0373776986
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Format(s): Paperback (416 pgs), e-book
Book Source: Publisher
About the book:
|
What I’m talking about:
|
Wicked Nights is the first book in Ms. Showalter’s new Angels of the Dark series - a spin off from her wickedly delightful Lords of the Underworld series. The new series follows a group of desperate and dangerous angels, each whose status with the heavenly plane is in serious jeopardy. This “Army of Disgrace” is lead by Zacharel - a cold and unfeeling warrior angel we met in the LotU books. Due to his lack of compassion for life, Zacharel has displeased his Deity and has been assigned to lead this band of misfits - sharing their fate as his own. A true “all for one and one for all” situation.
Wicked Nights opens with sweet Annabelle waking from a wonderful dream on her eighteenth birthday, only to feel her eyes burning (and changing color) and witness her parents’ murder by a demon. She spends four years locked away, being horribly mistreated by both the demon and human population.
Zacharel’s army is charged with ridding the institution where Annabelle is locked up of the demons trying to break in. Curious to understand why the demons are there, he follows one to Annabelle. We learn that Annabelle is a high demon lord’s consort, and soon Zacharel cannot stop himself from wanting to help her.
This book throws the reader right into the thick of things. The opening chapters are raw and not for the light-hearted. When it appears Zacharel leaves Annabelle to be abused by her human doctors, I thought I couldn’t take any more. But Zach comes through and my heart was safe. Note: Annabelle’s torture and molestation are written non-graphically, yet it is far more painful to imagine than reading specific details.
Although Annabelle has been through hell and back, she is tough and will not rest until she kills the demon who caused her so much grief. She seems to still see the good in the world, and although she needs things to move at a slow pace, she continually moves forward with her feelings for Zacharel. And Zach - he is so clueless when it comes to emotions, especially human ones. He realizes he desires Annabelle, but doesn’t know how to address his feelings. When the pair share their first kiss it was full of such joy and then such sadness. It started so delightfully-sending butterflies to my belly. But then Zacharel didn’t understand how to deal with the overwhelming sensations, and he went too far. My heart broke. Luckily, the pair recognize their true feelings, and soon they continue to explore things each thought that they’d never experience. I felt their romance was sweet - not tainted by previous relationships, and although their world was in constant danger, they found time to just be.
There are several minor characters that make up Zacharel’s team. Ms. Showalter does a superb job introducing each and giving us just enough information to pique interest. We know enough about them to get a feel of how they will react within the storyline, but we are left with questions about their personal history. The characters are complex, each with issues that caused them to be on this "Army of Disgrace,” and I for one am looking forward to finding out more.
I really enjoyed Wicked Nights both in plot development and character creation. The world building was done at the perfect pace-giving the reader lots of information, but not cramming it into tight spaces. Whether or not the fact that I have read all of the LotU books leading up to this story helped me jump into the this world so easily, I cannot say. However, the development of characters and world was smooth.
And for fans of LotU, we do get glimpses of some of the boys and their mates. The characters didn't overrun the story nor were they awkwardly placed. Their appearances served the storyline, and the world created in this book is still all its own. One does not need to have read LotU to enjoy this book.
For fans of Meljean Brook's Guardian series, I think you will enjoy as well. I was constantly reminded of her amazing world while reading Wicked Nights. Not because they are identical (their mythologies are very different), but because both series have well-developed, exciting and interesting angel-demon storylines.
Overall I really enjoyed this book. Meeting the "team" and learning just enough about each to keep me interested and wanting to know more was definitely a highlight. I loved Zacharel's transformation as he went from cold, heartless warrior to a man capable of love and able to see goodness in and learn to respect others.
All-in-all a fantastic start to a "newish" series that can be enjoyed by new Gena Showalter fans and longtime readers alike. The pace flows well, the action intense. The overall story arc is appealing, and I am looking forward to more.

REVIEW HERE
Rachel tipped her face into the stinging spray, needing to melt away the hellish tension from carrying around the burden of what she knew. Finally, she had someone who was willing to listen to her, to help her. And not just anyone.
Liam.
Her skin tingled with a heat beyond anything coming out of the shower head. The bathroom steam was so thick it almost muted the avocado green tile of the outdated bathroom. Rivulets streaked down the brown striped shower curtain. Everywhere around her, she confronted reminders of Liam, packing her brain with images of him standing in this shower.
The scent of his aftershave clung to the air. Reminders of Liam greeted her eyes no matter which way she turned - his shaving gel, razor, shampoo, and sport body wash. The space was as clean as the rest of the neatly kept house.
A crack of thunder split the air, startling her. Maybe she should have just stood out in the rain and let it wash her clean. She'd certainly done so in the past on SAR missions - rain, storms, waterfalls.
Thunder pounded again. Louder. So close it sounded nearly on top of her. She shrieked in surprise before she could finish registering it was only someone knocking. Knocking mighty hard.
"Liam?" she called out as the door exploded open. His broad shoulders filled the door, his dark blond hair backlit by illumination from the hall. "Are you okay? You screamed."
She yanked the shower curtain to her body and said again, "Liam!"
Disco head-butted the back of Liam's leg, whining. He moved deeper into the bathroom.
Her hands fisted around the brown vinyl curtain. "I screamed because you scared the crap out of me."
"Sorry. Here." He yanked an oversized towel from the rack and tossed it to her. "You need to get dressed."
She snagged the towel with one hand while her other still clutched tightly to the shower curtain. "I'm almost through. I'll be out soon."
"We don't have any more time-" He stopped in his tracks. His eyes went wide, the sea green tint going stormy deep. His throat moved in a slow swallow before his gaze shot back up to her face.
She been attracted to him before, more than any man since her fiance. But Liam had mentioned that love word back in the Bahamas. Such a beautiful, pain-filled word. Although he could have only been half serious about the whole love thing, she couldn't go there again, not even partially. She'd resisted the sensual draw during the three weeks they'd worked together on the earthquake relief. Although right now, with her defenses stripped even barer than her body at the moment, she found it almost impossible to resist stepping into his arms again.
"Liam?" Clutching the towel to her breasts, she swayed.
He scrubbed a hand over his square jaw, his eyes locked on her face. "Someone blew up your town house."
