Saturday Conversations 02/02/13

Today we continue a new topic to our Saturday Conversation posts... this will be a reoccurring chat (see schedule below). I hope you enjoy this read along!

Mmmhm. The Boss is here! Twice per month, we will have author Abigail Barnette here on the blog to discuss the latest installment of her serial contemporary erotic romance, The Boss. Ms. Barnette is providing The Boss free to her readers, with new chapters on the 15th and 30th of each month. If you're new to our Read-Along, go to our first post HERE and see what all the fuss is about!

This week, we're sending you to read Chapter 2 HERE, then come back to this post to discuss your thoughts on The Boss, and read what others have to say.  No.  Don't scroll to see what they're saying first.  Cheater.  Go. Read.  It's only about 20 pages!  We’ve included a handy SCHEDULE below so you’ll be ready for the next installment discussion. Just bookmark Abigail’s site, and then you can devour the next chapter the moment it goes LIVE!

We're excited to have Abigail here, sharing her serial, The Boss, with us.

The Boss Read-Along

Let's start off our discussion of Chapter 2 with hearing about your thoughts on meeting expectations.  Sophie said she's spent the past six years using Leif/Neal as the measure by which she's judged all her lovers, and finding them lacking.  We all conjure images of perfection from various relationships over time. Even though it's a difficult topic to broach, what types of unrealistic expectations have you held in your life?

Discuss amongst yourselves!  Abigail and VampBard will be around to kick in their 2 cents until Tuesday!

About the Author

The alter-ego of USA Today Bestselling Author Jenny Trout (Jennifer Armintrout), Abigail Barnette was born during a conversation with author Bronwyn Green, who encouraged Jenny to develop an elaborate fantasy persona-- complete with nom de plume-- under which to pen erotic romance. Abigail enjoys long naps in fairy-filled glades, running through corridors in tragically romantic haunted castles, and drinking goblet after goblet of spiced wine.

Sophomore year of college. Star pitcher for baseball team. Wow. He was so into me! Perfect, right? Until I realized I was working my ass off & he wasn't doing anything but partying. I expected that it would be enough that he worshipped the physical stuff about me. It wasn't. Ran into him, a decade later. Nervous, because I'd broken up with him without completely resolving why. I used to daydream, before then, that he was pining away for me. In a way he was...But I was happy with my decision, finally.

So, I'm loving The Boss. The only thing that gave me pause was the age difference between the two main characters. (zomg spoiler?)

It kind of makes me feel like Neil took advantage of Sophie (well, he DEFINITELY did, considering what he did before he left her), but yeah... JUST MY THOUGHT. :)

Okay, I'm going to talk about this chapter and avoid the question... hehe

I liked this chapter a lot because we got to see more of who Sophie is behind her job and a one-night-stand she'll never forget. I enjoyed seeing how she responded to life and interacted with Holli. And I LOVED how she confronted Neil and his respond. Perfect!!

Hee! We should talk about the bathtub... I totally agree that Sophie's reaction was perfect! @Liz- not a spoiler! We all should have read chapter 1 before discussing :-) Feel free to react to any part of the two chapters!

So. The bathtub.... Definitely learned that I don't want hardwood floors in my bathroom! Hee!

Jenny Trout said...

The bathtub reveals a dark secret about my writing... I'm just doing this to talk about awesome fixtures I can't afford for my own my bathroom. I've built this entire book around that bathtub! XD

Firstly, I want to say that I am LOVING The Boss. LOVING IT. I love that Sophie seems like a real person and her complicated emotions come through really well (I mean, it seems like a normal reaction to the situation to both want and resent this man). I'm looking forward to seeing how it all plays out. Also, the sex seems super hot.

Speaking of which, I feel like the description of the spanking scene involved Neil's hand doing some acrobatics... I found myself wondering "If his thumb is there... and his fingers are there... whew that sounds hot... but how his the hell of his hand.. huh?" Did I miss something? Or, am I just not picturing it correctly?

Laura said...

Ohmigod...I can't tell you how much I'm loving The Boss. Each time I've come to the end of the chapter, I'm all sad face.

I, for one, honestly love that Sophie is a real person, with some real actual sexual experience. I think the second chapter with it's insight into her life, already makes her seem more real than Ana has seemed over the course of all three books. I think you would be hard pressed to find a young woman in New York working in fashion who didn't drink and smoke pot. So, I felt that part of the story was real.

My only real Huh? moment came during the recalling of the sex scene that Christine Hurtt is talking about...Being a lesbian, I was trying to sort of map out how that would work, and unless Neil has hands much, much larger and more bendy than mine, I just don't see it.

That being said, I love this story so far. I am in agony waiting for the next chapters. You're doing a fantastic job...and I will be buying some of your other Abigale Barnette books. I've already downloade Bride of the Wolf, and loved it, but I'm definitely going to download more. ;)

I agree that I was confused about what his hand was doing in that scene as well! But otherwise, greatly enjoyed this chapter. Especially like the 2 m's - mary jane and that other bathtub-related one - because girls in their 20's in books are generally not portrayed as enjoying either of these, and being a girl in my 20's myself, I can tell you that many, many of us definitely do, so kudos to Jen for having the truth right out there like that.

Laura said...

Also, I was just saying to a friend that it's a shame that you have ethics, because this story is already sooo much better than 50 Shades and it would be so nice to see this make some of the money that 50 Shades did. Although....so many of EL's rabid fans are idiots and would rather flay you alive than read a book that is actually good.

The Boss is awesome so far! I was so excited to get m e-mail today with this post in it. Have shared it and will continue to share it all the way through to the end. It's awesome so far! Can't wait for the next chapter!

Enough exclamation points for you? :)

re: Hand acrobatics... The way I read that section, Neil was using two hands. The 'heel' hand...that was all it did, IMHO.

Twimom227 said...

LMOA... How much do you LOVE that we are discussing the positioning of his hand during sex?! That's what makes this discussion so much fun!

Jenny Trout said...

I don't know what I was thinking with the hand thing, LOL! I had written it one way, and a beta had said, "That doesn't work," and I tried to figure it out another way and I think I clearly just made it worse. But I'm totally charmed by the number of conversations I've had about fingering since I posted that chapter. I'm totally leaving it in the original post, but when I offer the full book as a .pdf download at the end of the whole thing, that scene will be corrected. :D

I'm having a lot of fun reading this, and am so glad I was shown your website! My amazon wishlist has grown considerably! I don't care for the drug use (mock me if you must, it's like, my opinion man) but I'm enjoying it otherwise! Thanks for sharing it free!

Haha, I loved her reaction to be asked about "What do you want me to do to you?" I imagine my reaction being similar, if not even less decisive. I always thought that seemed like a really awkward question. That being said, reading these chapters is actually my first venture into the romance/erotic genre, so I'll admit the thing that made me hottest under collar was the bathtub. Because that bathtub seems amazing.
